The fate of a couple admitted into the Madona Hospital, Umuahia, the Abia State capital, for burns sustained in a kerosene explosion about six weeks ago, now hangs on the payment of the sum of N700,000 for their treatment.

The Administrator of the hospital, Rev. Father Christian Anokwuru, told our correspondent that the N700, 000 would cover the fee for the couple’s treatment and surgery.

the victims were brought to the hospital in a very bad condition and without money to even make deposits, adding that despite the challenge, the doctors at the facility went ahead to admit them

Anokwuru said the victims were brought to the hospital in a very bad condition and without money to even make deposits, adding that despite the challenge, the doctors at the facility went ahead to admit them.

The clergy man added that since their admission, the Catholic Church-owned hospital had borne the cost of the treatment for the couple with three children.

Disclosing that though the hospital had not been receiving subvention from government, it had the capacity and equipment required to treat the couple.

The couple, 43-year-old Uchendu Jacob, who is a carpenter, and his wife, Chidinma Uchendu Jacob, 32, were involved in the fire accident on August 4,
2018.

Jacob told our correspondent on his sick bed that the explosion occurred, while his wife was refiling their lantern in their bedroom at about 11 pm.

According to him, on hearing the explosion, he ran into the bedroom from the parlour, where he had been sleeping, to rescue both his wife and children.

The couple is, therefore, appealing to public-spirited individuals, non-governmental organisations, business and corporate bodies to come to their rescue by assisting them in raising the money to settle their hospital bills.
