There was confusion in Igbeti town, Olorunsogo Local Government Area of Oyo State at the weekend, as a group of violent youth attacked a resident of the community simply identified as Sikiru.
Sikiru, who narrated his ordeal in a viral video, sustained a machete cut on his left wrist.
“I was attacked by a band of thugs that is notorious for bullying innocent members of the public some minutes ago,” Sikiru, who spoke in Yoruba Language, said.
The young man attributed his attack by the group to his refusal to join them having been reportedly persuaded to do so by their leader.
Sikiru said that he was sitting under a tree when the fierce-looking members of the group walked up to him and accosted him.
“They simply asked me of the reason for the misunderstanding between me and their leader, Mudasiru Olaniyan, (a.k.a Igidaduro).
“I was shocked by their question and I started feeling unsafe. I quickly walked away from them and stood beside two police officers who were standing nearby. The policemen asked what the problem was. I explained that their leader was trying to attract me to their group but I turned down the offer.
“Few minutes later, they mobilized and came back to where I was standing a few metres away from the policemen. They brandished machetes and clubs.
“This time around, their leader had arrived. He said that his men should kill me. It was in the process that they inflicted the machete cut on me.
“Those who attacked me with dangerous weapons are Olayanju Mudashiru, Azeez Adola, Falilu omo Jesu, Alani Lekan, Dauda Dogo and Tunde Dogo,” he said.
The matter was allegedly reported at the police station. It was learnt that the Divisional Police Officer in Igbeti was out of town when the incident happened.
A businessman in the town, named Peter Olaoluwa, said that “This is what we are facing in Igbeti. Igidaduro and his men have constituted a nuisance to the people.
“Those who attacked Sikiru had been invited to the police station to write a statement but they were released immediately after.”
Efforts made by our correspondent to hear from the police as of the time of filing this report were aborted as the Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Adewale Osifeso, could not be reached.
