Commercial driver faces trial for biting off taskforce member’s finger in Ebonyi

A commercial driver has been brought before a Magistrate court sitting in Abakaliki for biting off the finger of a taskforce member in Ebonyi State.

The 47-year-old driver, Uchenna Atuegbu, in a suit numbered MAB/839c/2021, was accused of allegedly biting off the finger of Iboko Onyebuchi, a taskforce personnel while trying to evade arrest for illegal parking and loading at Onuebonyi Junction in Abakaliki, on November 16.

The charge against him read that “Atuegbu Uchenna, on the 16th of November 2021 at Mechanic Village, Abakaliki, within the Abakaliki magisterial district, did unlawfully assault one Iboko Onyebuchi while on official duty as a staff of the Ebonyi State Ministry of Capital City Development Authority by giving him a bite that cut off one of his right fingers which caused him bodily harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 33 Volume 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The suspect, who stood trial without any legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him.

The Magistrate, Ngozi Ngele, granted the suspect bail in the tune of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

The matter was adjourned to 17th of January, 2022 for continuation of hearing.
