Cold weather: How couple suffocated to death while warming room with charcoal fire

Kano State Police Command has revealed how a young couple suffocated to death in their bedroom after making a charcoal fire to warn the room due to cold weather.

The couple, Mr Sulaiman Idris, aged 28 and Mrs Maimuna Haliru, 20, were found dead on their matrimonial bed in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area the state after doors to their house were forced open.

In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, some relations and neighbours of the couple had not seen them since January 2, 2023, before they were found dead the next day.

According to preliminary investigation, the deceased couple lit a charcoal fire to warm the room due to cold weather but got suffocated while asleep.

Haruna-Kiyawa said, “They locked up and got suffocated by the smoke that emanated from the burning charcoal while fast asleep.

“We received a report on January 3, at about 9 p.m from Kwa Village in Dawakin Tofa LGA that a couple was discovered not to have come out of their matrimonial home since they were last seen on January 2 about 11 p.m.

“When the grandmother of Idris forced the door open, she discovered the couple motionless on the matrimonial bed, with smoke odour pervading the room.

“On receipt of the report, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Dauda, directed a team of detectives led by CSP Ahmed Hamza, DPO Dawakin Tofa Division to proceed to the scene.

“The bodies of the victims were removed from the scene and rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano where a medical doctor confirmed them dead,” he stated.

The PPRO said more investigation was in progress on the incident and advised the people of the state to be careful while using fire from charcoal during harmattan.
