THE crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party assumed another dimension on Tuesday when seven members of the National Working Committee of the party reportedly dropped their resignation letters.
Those who resigned, The Point learnt, did so, explaining that they could no longer work with the NWC as currently constituted.
They however said they would remain loyal to the main opposition party.
Though an official statement had not been released to address this issue, the National Organising Secretary of PDP, Col. Austin Akobundu (retd), confirmed the development.
Though who resigned, according to findings, include the Deputy National Financial Secretary, Deputy Legal Adviser, Deputy National Auditor, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Deputy Women Leader, and Deputy Organising Secretary.
The designation of the seventh person was not clear as of the time of filing this report.
The Point had exclusively reported that, following a report published in the July 5 2021 edition, national leaders of the PDP had begun what stakeholders described as a last minute effort to put the main opposition party in a position to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress come 2023.
Information gathered by our correspondents from impeccable sources within the PDP pointed at a possible removal of Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the party even before the party’s forthcoming convention.
A source, who was a South West senatorial candidate of the party in the 2019 election, said top stakeholders were currently fine-tuning the process of changing the PDP national leadership by ensuring that those who should be in on the plan were convinced.
“As I speak to you, it seems no one would be able to help Secondus, as his main man is, right now, neither here nor there. To him, Governor Nyesom Wike is the only one who wants him out. But he is getting it wrong and all hands are now on deck to ensure a new lease of life for the PDP,” the source, who preferred not to be named, said.
The latest resignations, stakeholders told The Point in confidence, might be the beginning of Secondus’ exit from the office of the National Chairman.
