.. urges youths to discontinue protests nationwide

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, urged Nigerian youths protesting against brutality and extra-judicial killings perpetrated mainly by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, to discontinue their protests nationwide.
Buhari made the appeal in his first nationwide broadcast on the #EndSARS protests, since they broke out about three weeks ago, warning, however, that the Federal Government would not allow anyone to “disturb the peace of the nation.”
He said he was deeply pained that lives had been lost and properties destroyed needlessly in the name of a protest that was meant to be a peaceful one.
The President recognised the rights of the youths to demand for legitimate needs, but added that the process had been hijacked by mischief makers for their selfish ends.
According to him, the spreading of deliberate falsehood and misinformation through the social media is a ploy to mislead the unwary into unfair judgements about his administration.
“Both our deeds and words have shown how committed this administration has been,” he stressed.
I call on our youth to discontinue the protests. We urge security agencies to protect lives and properties without causing harm to the people they are meant to protect,” the President added, but warned that the Federal Government would not allow any group to disturb the peace of the nation.
