The Benue State Internal Revenue Service on Thursday, sealed the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, over unremitted Pay As You Earn tax to the tune of over N2.3 billion.
Leading an enforcement team to the university, the BIRS Executive Chairman, Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi, in the early hours of the day, sealed off the offices of the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar and the Bursar.
Mrs. Adzape-Orubibi, in a chat with newsmen shortly after the shutdown, said that the BIRS took the decision after the institution failed to honour several letters written to it to pay up the outstanding Personal Income Tax from 2007 to 2011.
She explained that the BIRS got a court order to distrain FUAM, because it deducted, but failed to remit PAYE tax in some cases and under deducted in other cases; adding that the institution would now have to pay about N3 billion, inclusive of penalties and interest.
She noted that though, the entire premises would have been sealed, but for the concern of the state government, over education, and would therefore not want to render the students helpless.
She added that it became imperative to seal the institution because of the continued evasion of tax by the school authority.
