Nigeria’s Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike has hailed Adijat Adenike Olarinoye’s gold medal win at the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and charged the entire team to gun for more medals.
Team Nigeria won its first Gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games through Olarinoye at the weekend as she lifted 55kg in the women’s category weightlifting.
Despite coming under pressure against her Indian opponent who pushed her to the last lift, she survived to clinch gold medal.
Reacting to the victory, Ejidike said it is a sign that the athletes have shown that they are worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.
“I want to congratulate Adijat Adenike Olarinoye for making us proud and the gold medal win is a sign that the athletes are worthy ambassadors of Nigeria. This is the beginning of the medals haul and I want them to stay focused.
“I want to charge the Team Nigeria athletes to work harder and win more medals,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Sports Ministry has clarified Team Nigeria kits issue. The Ministry revealed that they are aware that federations have their own arrangements with different manufacturers with different delivery times and expectations which is being monitored very closely.
According to them, about 300 Team Nigeria kits were delivered over two weeks ago and have since be issued to almost all the athletes at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
These include track suits, house wears, sneakers, face caps, back packs, trolley bags, shorts, and ceremonial wears.
Team Nigeria athletes have since been donning them in Birmingham as was evident at last Thursday night’s opening ceremony and other team functions. However, the competition kits for each federation differ.
