The Arewa Youth Assembly has voiced its support for the Nigeria Communications Commission’s approval of a 50% tariff increase requested by telecommunication operators, citing its economic necessity and potential to revitalize the telecom sector.
In a statement released on Thursday, the speaker of the Arewa Youth Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, described the tariff adjustment as overdue and essential for sustaining the industry in light of rising operational costs.
Danlami explained, “The telecommunications sector, which employs millions of Nigerians directly and powers other sectors of the country, has maintained the status quo in terms of service pricing despite the soaring costs of diesel, power, and manpower.
“The industry was nearing collapse due to inflation, rising foreign exchange rates, and increased network maintenance costs. No serious regulator would allow such a collapse without intervening. This adjustment is a fundamental step to preserve the sector and its critical role in the economy.”
The speaker also highlighted how the tariff adjustment could transform the sector, stating, “This tariff adjustment will enable operators to purchase new equipment to improve the country’s telecommunication infrastructure.
“It will re-energise the industry, encouraging investments that will improve network quality, extend access, and enhance the consumer experience,” he said.
Danlami addressed critics of the rate increase, emphasising the link between cost-effective pricing and better service performance.
“It’s interesting that individuals complaining about bill increases are also criticising poor service delivery.
“Telecommunication companies cannot enhance their infrastructure to meet growing demand without sufficient funding. To solve Quality of Service problems, new investments are essential,” he said.
The Arewa Youth Assembly expressed optimism that the adjustment would spur sectoral growth, create job opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.
“We are hopeful that this move will lead to an unprecedented expansion of the sector, creating more employment opportunities for Nigerians, particularly the youth,” according to Danlami.
The group also praised the NCC for guaranteeing justice, openness, and accountability in the telecoms sector, encouraging the commission to monitor the tariff adjustment to ensure customer benefits.
