The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has disowned Tony Okocha, describing him as an imposter and warning the public to disregard his recent call for the resignation or impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to either resign or face impeachment.
But in a strongly worded statement issued by Emeka Beke, the Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, the party distanced itself from Okocha, stating that he is neither a known member of the party nor qualified to speak on its behalf.
“My attention has been drawn to a statement issued by one faceless Tony Okocha, a non-member of our party, addressing himself as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State and calling for the resignation of the Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara.
“I wish to inform the general public that Tony Okocha is not a known member of the party and is neither eligible nor qualified to speak for and on behalf of the party. Therefore, the APC calls on the good people of Rivers State to disregard the baseless call for the resignation of the governor by Tony Okocha, who is a known enemy of the state and a crisis merchant.”
Beke further warned Okocha to desist from parading himself as the APC chairman in Rivers State, describing his actions as a public nuisance.
He emphasized that the party remains committed to supporting good governance and commended Governor Fubara for his efforts in rescuing the state from what he described as “executive rascality.”
“As a party, we are committed to supporting good governance and are happy that the governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Joseph Fubara, has rescued the state from the act of executive rascality, ceaseless abuse of our established cherished traditional institution, and gross mismanagement of the state’s monthly statutory allocation. He has demonstrated that accountability and transparency are the cornerstones of good governance,” Beke said.
Beke also criticized Okocha’s call for impeachment, stating that such matters are governed by constitutional provisions and procedures, not by individuals making unfounded statements to the media.
“Tony Okocha should learn that the issue of impeachment is a constitutional matter, with well-enacted provisions and procedures, and not something an individual will wake up and begin to address the media about,” he stated.
He further emphasised that Governor Fubara was democratically elected by the people of Rivers State and deserves respect.
“The governor is constitutionally and democratically elected by Rivers people and should be respected. Hence, the unwarranted call for his resignation is an insult to Rivers people and an abuse of freedom of speech,” Beke added.
In a bid to prevent further escalation, Beke called on security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the Director of the State Security Service, to take action against Okocha.
He described Okocha as an imposter who has been acting in flagrant disobedience of the law.
“I call on the Inspector General of Police, the Director of State Security Service (DSS), and other conventional security agencies to note that Chief Tony Okocha is an imposter and should be called to forestall a breakdown of law and order in the state.
“He tried to become a member of our party through the back door and has been sacked by a court of competent jurisdiction, yet he continues to act in flagrant disobedience of the law,” Beke declared.
The APC Chairman concluded by issuing a stern warning to Okocha, urging him to cease his activities immediately.
“Tony Okocha should desist from parading himself as the APC chairman in Rivers State. His actions are causing public nuisance and could destabilize the peace and stability of the state,” Beke warned.
Earlier, the All Progressives Congress led by Tony Okocha in Rivers State had asked the State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to resign or face impeachment by the State House of Assembly.
This came three days after Governor Fubara sent a letter of invitation to the 27 state Assembly lawmakers, loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, inviting them for a reconciliation meeting.
Addressing journalists in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the State, Okocha said the governor should resign honorably or face the embarrassment of impeachment by the lawmakers.
He stated that the governor had a long opportunity for reconciliation following President Bola Tinubu’s peace meeting and other calls for peace and reconciliation with the lawmakers, but he allegedly flaunted such counsel and followed what he described as misleading advice.
Okocha, who stated that the governor was already sitting on a “keg of gun powder”, said “As a political party, we are today advising the governor; there are two options, resign honourably or be impeached. That is the position of the All Progressives Congress. He has disrespected Mr. President and we told him that we cannot be here and have him disrespect Mr. President.
“The offences are there; the Supreme Court has agreed and even provided us with more evidence. The House of Assembly does not need to set up any committee again to investigate him.
“48 hours is too much to give him an ultimatum. He should just resign honourably.”
Speaking further on the governor’s invitation to the lawmakers, Okocha said, “My response to the Greek Gift the governor is attempting to extend to the 27 lawmakers is, it is not within the ambit of the law and it is already belated.
“One of the aberrations is for the governor to send an invitation to the Assembly, inviting them to his office through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The governor has disrespected President Ahmed Tinubu after his intervention when the crisis started in 2023 and even abused court judgements with impunity.
“The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek Gift. The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the governor now is for him to resign or be impeached.
“It is stupidity that made Nza (a small species of bird) to challenge his chi (god), to a fight. We have always told the governor that if he brings insect-infested firewood to his house, he has literally invited lizards to a feast.”
Okocha however, congratulated the 27 lawmakers for standing on their ground while the Supreme Court delivered its decision on the crisis.
He described the lawmakers as “faces of democracy”.
He insisted that the governor should go to the House to present the budget and list of commissioner nominees.
