A 39-year-old-woman, Ikuomola Kokumo, has been arrested by the Osun State Police Command for allegedly slapping and beating up a police officer.

Kokumo was dragged to Oke-Baale Police Division in Osogbo by her lover with whom she engaged in a fight after he reportedly jilted her.

At the police station, the suspect and her estranged lover were asked to explain what led to their disagreement during which Kokumo allegedly got provoked and attacked a woman Inspector, Ehinmowo Oyebola, by slapping and beating her up.

She was arraigned by the police at a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo on allegations of assault and breach of public peace.

Then charge against her read that “Ikuomola Kokumo, on the 26th day of November, 2022 at about at Oke-Baale Police Station in Osogbo, did slap one W/Inspector Ehinmowo Oyebola, the Charge Room Officer, while performing her lawful duty and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 356 (5) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You, Ikuomola Kokumo, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by causing pandemonium at the police charge room, Oke-Baale, Osogbo and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 249 (D) of Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You did beat up one W/Inspector Ehinmowo Oyebola with fist blow while performing her lawful duty as the charge room officer and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 351 of Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her. The defence counsel, T. B. Ayodele applied for her bail in liberal terms and assured that a reliable person would be provided as surety.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Olayinka Rasaki, objected to her bail application on the ground that Kokumo would further commit a similar offence.
Chief Magistrate M. A. Olatunji asked the accused person to furnish the court with a formal bail application.
