Anglican Bishop tasks FG on youth employment

 Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos, (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Humphrey Olumakaiye,  on Monday urged the Federal Government to do more in the area of youth unemployment.
Olumakaiye said this at the opening ceremony of the 1st Session of the 34 Synod of the Diocese of Lagos entitled, “The unfailing faith of our fathers: Ever sufficient at Our Saviours Church, Lagos.
According to him a nation that does not invest in the future of her youths is only investing in civil unrest and such nation is sitting on a keg of gun powder.
The cleric identified agricultural sector as the engine that drives the nations economy inspite the oil boom and the position crude oil occupies in the global economy.
“The agricultural sector if it is properly harnessed can provide huge employment opportunities for the teeming population, eradicate hunger and reduce poverty.
“Way back in the 60s Nigeria agricultural sector according to the Bureau of Statistic constituted about 64 per cent of the nations GDP, today it barely contributes a paltry 25.13 per cent,” he said.
The cleric urged the government to increase funding of the agricultural sector.
“Larger percentage of the harvest of the harvest are being wasted due to lack of storage and preservative facilities. Processing equipment are not within the reach of an average farmer.
“We salute the ongoing effort to resolve the menace of herdsmen/farmers crisis, which has made many farmers to abandon their farm settlements.
“Government should put machineries in place  to put a stop to killing of innocent lives in our nation and continue to do everything possible to ensure that the nation to feed her citizens in the short, medium and long term,” he said.
The  Governors of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode has urged Lagosians to pray and support the incoming governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu so that Lagos State can continue to progress in the path of peace.
He said that Lagos State is on the upward trajectory and needs Continued unity, cooperation and peaceful coexistence to continue in its good course.
He also thanked citizens and the church for their support for the last four years of his administration built in the atmosphere of love, peace and brotherhood.
“It’s on record that no single religious conflict was recorded in the state for the last four years. The peaceful coexistence of all religious sects is a testimony of our collective heritage”, he said.
“The theme of the synod is apt and personal for me, because it is a call for us to remember who we are and our children,” he said. crime rate and criminality will reduced. Kidnapping will reduce, ritual killings, thuggery and vandalism will also reduce.
