As further evidence of his administration’s commitment to the reformation and strengthening of public school system in Lagos State, Governor Akinwumi Ambode has taken another step by laying the foundation for a new model school at Angus Memorial High School, Somolu.
The governor, while speaking at the foundation laying ceremony, said, “Our commitment is to ensure that students in public schools are given the best in terms of quality teaching and learning environment.
Since my assumption of office, we have made conscious efforts through policies and programmes that place high premium on education as a vehicle for continued and future prosperity of our state.”
He declared that the result of these efforts were becoming manifest in the improved performance of public schools’ students, particularly in the last West African School Certificate Examinations, adding that this development was assuring and a measure of what to expect when the various performance enhancing programmes being put in place were fully implemented.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, today, we are introducing a new model of block of classrooms in our public secondary schools.
This edifice, the foundation of which we are laying today, apart from aiding teaching and learning, will compare favourably with high school structures in leading countries of the world,” he said.
Ambode stated further that apart from its aesthetic value, the new structure was capable of enhancing security of students, staff and schools’ materials in the face of the recent security breaches in our schools.
The structure comprises 36 classrooms, library, staff rooms, multipurpose hall, laboratories, principal/ vice-principal’s offices and modern toilet facilities for both junior and senior schools.
The governor assured the students of his administration’s commitment to building a future of great opportunities, possibilities and prosperity through the provision of qualitative education consistent with the demands of the 21st century.
He enjoined them to fully embrace the opportunity by showing serious commitment to their studies and shun all negative values that would hinder them from realising their dreams.
The Lagos State helmsman also assured parents that his administration would continue to do the best to ensure that schools were secured against intruders, having put in place measures to secure pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff.
In her welcome address, Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, said that the words and actions of the governor about education in Lagos State spoke volumes about his passion to ensure the provision of high quality education accessible to all learners through effective and efficient management of resources for the attainment of self- reliance and socio-economic development.
Adebule, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, said that the intervention of this administration in public schools had been yielding results with the improved students’ performance outcomes in the results of examinations, national and international competitions, improved morals, etiquette, and confidence in public speaking.
