Contrary to sponsored news report in some sections of the media that some unnamed Senators were allegedly plotting to impeach the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Akpabio is stable and unperturbed by what appears to be a syndicated media attack from outside the precincts of the National Assembly.

Reacting to syndicated reports in some weekend newspapers about plots to destabilise the Senate and its leadership, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President of the Senate, Eseme Eyiboh, said on Saturday that the reports were complete imaginations and sometimes laced with malice to achieve what Senators are yet to comprehend.

“The Senate has since moved on after the leadership contest. The plot to drag in Senators who initially did not support the emergence of the present leadership into a conspiracy that does not exist was uncharitable to the Senators.

“Senators are presently concluding their holidays in their constituencies and other places they have chosen to spend their time after the rigours of the inauguration and ministerial screening.

“All senators are also refreshing themselves ahead of resumption and suggestions that they are presently engaged in other subversive plots against the institution are rather uncharitable. It is especially uncharitable for those Senators who initially did not support the emergence of the leadership, but who have all unanimously endorsed the Senator Akpabio-led leadership.

“Continuing to link these Senators with one conspiracy or the other with barely disguised innuendo is rather unkind. We call on the media not to give in to the conspiratorial tales and to please not give damage to the reputations that they have built over time,” Eyiboh concluded.

It was reported by a section of the media on Saturday that some aggrieved senators have started making moves to impeach Akpabio, when the Senate reconvenes on September 26, 2023.

It was reported that investigations revealed that two prominent senators from the North West and other senators across the national assembly were already meeting and mapping out plans to carry out the daring move.

According to sources who revealed these, the senators believed that the senate president is a rubber stamp for the presidency and may not be able to carry out his duty effectively.

They are also planning to not only impeach the senate president but to make the leadership of the senate not favorable to the presidency thereby creating an uncomfortable situation for the president.

Part of the plans, it was reported, showed, include floating a new political party, which will be spearheaded by a former governor from the North West, who is a high ranking member of the senate and will likely be contesting for presidency under the new party.

The idea of the new party is to unsettle the current political parties, especially the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress and serve as an alternative for Nigerians come 2027.

It was also reported that these senators, who are already meeting, had recently met in Kwara State, where the idea of the political party was nurtured and agreed upon.

The sources also said that they are currently meeting in Saudi Arabia where they are perfecting plans to ensure that the Senate President is impeached when the national assembly reconvenes.

Part of their propaganda is to use the current economic situations in the country and the situations in Niger Republic to garner support of other senators against the Senate President thereby pushing for his impeachment for not tackling the presidency on these issues.

It was noted that the senate president has been having issues with some aggrieved senators after announcing the leadership of different committees in the senate, which didn’t go down well with them.

Also, he had stirred controversy following a viral video in which he stated that the Clerk of the National Assembly had credited accounts of the senators with tokens to enable them enjoy their holidays.

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly,” Akpabio had said.

However, he quickly recanted after he was reminded that the comments had gone public by saying what he meant to say was that he had sent prayers to the email boxes of the legislators.

This followed calls by a civil society advocacy group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria for his impeachment.

In a statement, HURIWA called for him to step aside and subject himself to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, for investigation for violating the relevant laws on lawful allowances or be impeached without further waste of time.
