A Nigerian Air Force, NAF, airstrike meant to target Lakurawa terrorists tragically hit two communities in Sokoto State, killing at least 10 residents on Christmas Day.

The incident occurred in Silame Local Government Area near the Surame forest, a known terrorist hideout.

Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, recounted the devastating event: “The airstrike happened around 7am, claiming the lives of over 10 villagers and injuring many others.”

The affected communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, were mistakenly bombed during the raid.

Silame local government Chairman, Abubakar Daftarana, expressed his shock at the incident, stating, “The bombs fell on peaceful villagers, innocent people without any criminal record. We are still assessing the extent of the damage.”

NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa confirmed the operation was based on “credible intelligence and aerial surveillance.”

However, he pledged a thorough investigation into claims of civilian casualties, stating, “We will update the public appropriately.”

In a related statement, Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullah of Operation Fansan Yamma emphasised that all military operations undergo rigorous intelligence checks.

“Strikes like this aim to neutralise terrorist threats while minimising civilian harm,” he explained.

Meanwhile, another attack in Borno State targeted a military base in Damboa local government with armed drones.

Five soldiers were injured in the assault, which involved mortars and locally fabricated grenades.

Sources suggest potential fatalities, but official confirmation remains pending.

The military maintained that its operations against terrorists would continue unabated.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned civilians against trading with terrorists, stating such actions sabotage security efforts.

“The mistakes of the past allowed terrorism to fester, but now we are determined to ensure peace in 2025,” General Musa remarked during a Christmas visit to wounded soldiers.

He called for nationwide cooperation to eliminate terrorist activities.

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede, also celebrated Christmas with troops in Maiduguri, commending their sacrifices.

He assured them of continued support from President Bola Tinubu for modern equipment to enhance counterinsurgency efforts.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum reiterated his commitment to supporting the military.

Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani, he announced a ₦2 million donation to injured frontline soldiers, praising their resilience in fighting terrorism.
