Let your attention be drawn to the rot and extortion going on in Lagos State General Hospitals ( Igando and Agege General Hospitals, to be precise). I am sure our wonderful governor is not aware of these corrupt and inhuman practices being perpetrated by nurses and doctors in the hospitals in Lagos.
Our pregnant mothers’ lives are now in danger, as a result. I heard a heart-breaking story from a pregnant woman, who attended ante-natal care yesterday in one of those health centres in Lagos. A delivery pack that is provided freely by the government is now being sold to the pregnant women in general hospitals at the rate of N8,500. Coconut oil and pads are sold at N2000; these items are collected from them on the day they go for their HIV test. It must be paid before they attend to you. Delivery charge, which was N32,000 has now been increased to N45,000 within the space of 14 days (two weeks), which they never expected. These fees must be paid before delivery! In the case of those to undergo Caesarean Section, the increase is from N45,000 to N90,000, all within 2 weeks. Many of them had to leave in tears and never to return to the hospitals as they don’t have any hope of raising such huge amount from anywhere, leaving behind blood donation, which they all made before ante-natal. This blood donation had to be made by their husbands.
It’s true that things have become so hard. But I want to appeal to Governor Ambode to be kind enough to look into this anomalies in our general hospitals and save our pregnant women.
