Operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad of the Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos, have arrested two suspected cultists for their alleged involvement in the killings of more than 20 members of their own group, Aiye Confraternity, aka Black Axe, and those belonging to a rival gang, Eye Confraternity, in Ado-Odo/Otta and Ifo local government areas of Ogun State.
The suspected cultists were arrested while planning to hold a meeting where they wanted to map out strategies for carrying out attacks on some targets at Agosi area of Ifo, creating panic in the area.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said that the suspected cultists had already confessed to carrying out many killings, including the gruesome murder of one Niyi aka Neyo, the then leader of the Aye confraternity in the Ifo area during an attempt to overthrow him.
Adejobi, a superintendent of police, said that Niyi was axed to death by the duo and others at large at the Western City Street in Ifo, Ogun State on March 29 this year.
The zonal PPRO added that the suspected killers, Sheriff Afeeri and Owoseeni Wasiu, were arrested and found in possession of some dangerous weapons, including an axe, a symbol of the Aye Confraternity.
“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, AIG Abdulmajid Ali, has directed proper investigation into the case and apprehension of other members of the gang, who have been linked with series of killings in the area and in Ogun State in general.
“The AIG has vowed to get the zone rid of cultists and hoodlums, who have been terrorizing innocent Nigerians in Lagos and Ogun States. And those arrested and others at large will be treated as murderers in as much as their actions have always been tailored to one killing or the other,” Adejobi said.
