The premises of the defunct Nigeria Telecommunication Limited in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has become a haven for destitute and miscreants, investigation by The Point has revealed.
The NITEL facility, situated around the Post Office area in Ilorin, has gradually become a hideout for all forms of shady characters, who now use the environment as a cover to perpetrate their nefarious acts, especially at night.
According to findings, people of questionable character usually converge on the building and because it has been abandoned for long, the miscreants take refuge inside it after committing crime in the area to get away from the law.
The Point learnt that the taskforce set up by the state government has, at various times, dislodged hawkers, traders, loiterers and makeshift shop owners, who illegally occupied space around the facility, including those plying their trade on the walkway.
However, during a recent visit to the area, The Point observed that operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been deployed around the NITEL premises to mount surveillance.
Also, the traders around the building appeared to have been evacuated.
