A truck driver has been detained in police custody in Kano for the alleged gruesome killing of one Zahradeen Aminu Ismail, an official of the Kano Road Traffic Agency.
The driver, when ordered by the KAROTA officials to stop, defied their instruction. The driver was alleged to have sped off in an attempt to escape thereby resulting in a hot chase of the offender by the traffic officials, our correspondent gathered.
According to a witness, who spoke to The Point under the condition of anonymity, the traffic officials riding on their motor bikes chased the driver to BUK Road, where the accident occurred.
“They chased the truck; I don’t know from where, and the KAROTA officials succeeded in stopping the truck right here in front of us, at Hayin Wanki, BUK Road.
“They rushed towards the door of the truck. The driver made an attempt to speed off again. One of the KAROTA men fell down from the door side and the truck climbed him.”
The Public Relations Officer, KAROTA, Nabulusi Kofar Naisa, confirmed that the agency lost one of its officials to the reckless action of a truck driver along BUK Road.
He said that the driver had declined to stop when requested to do so by KAROTA officials, stressing, “the driver sped off. Our men chased him to BUK Road where they caught up with him. In the process, while trying to get him to comply, he allegedly killed one of our men.”
Nabulusi further said that the late official was rushed to Muritala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where health officials on duty confirmed him dead.
He stated that with combined efforts of the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other sister security agencies, the suspected truck driver had been arrested with the truck and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
