British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said the new UN report on the consequences of Earth’s heating should serve as “a wake-up call” for world leaders as they prepare to gather in Scotland later this year for the next summit on the climate crisis.
Johnson said in a Downing Street statement, “Today’s report makes for sobering reading, and it is clear that the next decade is going to be pivotal to securing the future of our planet.
“We know what must be done to limit global warming – consign coal to history and shift to clean energy sources, protect nature and provide climate finance for countries on the frontline.”
World leaders will meet at the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in November, in what is being described as the most important meeting on the crisis since the 2015 Paris summit.
A key aim of the conference is to get governments to commit to tougher cuts to greenhouse gas emissions.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says the planet is getting closer to exceeding the Paris accord’s temperature thresholds, which are intended to avert the worst consequences of climate change.
