Oneya, former Kano, Benue governor and ex-NFA chairman dies at 73

Former military administrator of Kano, Benue States and ex-chairman of the defunct Nigeria Football Association, Brigadier General Dominic Oneya, has died at the age of 73.

The retired general died in his home in Effurun GRA, Uvwie LGA of Delta state on Thursday.

Abubakar Aminu Ibrahim, media aide of Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, announced the unfortunate news on Thursday.

Born in Lagos on May 26, 1948, he was military governor of Kano from August 1996 to August 1998 during the regime of Sani Abacha while also serving as Benue State military administrator from August 1998 to May 1999.

Oneya who hailed from Agbarho, Ughelli North LGA of Delta state, attended Baptist Academy, Yaba, Lagos from 1962 to 1967, before getting enrolled to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in May 1969 and was later commissioned in the infantry corps in September 1971.

Oneya was a graduate of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) from 1977 to 1980 in physical education and also attended the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna from 1983 to 1984, and the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College from 1987 to 1988.

Oneya retired from the army on January 17, 2000 before his appointment as NFA chairman.
