71-year-old woman bags PhD as UNILAG graduates 15,753

A 71-year-old woman, Marinze Felicia, is among the 148 graduating students in various fields to be awarded doctorate degrees of the total 15,753 graduating students at the 51st Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Also, the late former Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, is to be awarded with Emeritus Professorship (Post-Humous).

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, made the disclosure while briefing journalists on the graduation ceremony on Wednesday.

According to him, a total of 7,754 would be awarded first degree in various disciplines, while 7,999 would bag postgraduate degrees and diplomas in various fields.

Ogundipe added that of the figures, 281 made first-class, with the highest number, 70, coming from the Faculty of Engineering.

He said, “The best graduating student with the highest CGPA is Alimi Adedeji with 4.98 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

Adedeji emerged as the best graduating student. He is closely followed by Opeyemi Popoola with CGPA of 4.90 from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Popoola made the best result in the Humanities.

“The best overall PhD thesis for this year was presented by Moruf Olatunji from the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Science. Meagan Ekundayo from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences will be awarded the best PhD thesis in the Humanities.

“We have a record in the university, Marinze Ifeyinwa Felicia, born on 6th March, 1950 (now 71 years old) will be the oldest to be awarded a PhD degree in the history of the university.

“She has just demonstrated to the world that age is no barrier to attaining any height,” he stated.

The don also announced that honorary doctorate degrees would be awarded to Dr Ameyo Stella-Adadevoh (Post-Humous); Dr Biodun Olusina Shobanjo, Alhaji Mohammed Indimi, and Dr Kessington Adebutu.

The ceremony has been fixed to hold between July 5 and 8, 2021, while the Convocation lecture will be delivered by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

The lecture is titled, ‘National development and knowledge economy in the digital age: Leapfrogging SMEs into the 21st Century.’
