Former presidential flag-bearer of the African Action Alliance at the 2019 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has expressed displeasure at President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of his personal aide, Lauretta Onochie as a commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Sowore stated this in a tweet on Thursday, describing Onochie’s nomination as a “boobytrap” to ensure the 2023 elections are manipulated in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The activist said: “They keep asking you to go wait for 2023 (s)elections and then, boom-they sent a boobytrap @Laurestar to @inecnigeria to go waylay your fantasies!”

Sharing the opinion that INEC is incompetent in the discharge of its primary duty, he added that, “INEC as presently composed can’t count matchsticks in a matchbox freely, fairly and accurately!”

President Buhari has continually assured Nigerians of his determination to ensure a free and fair elections come 2023, however, his nomination of his aide for the position is seen in some quarters as a conflict of interest and a contradiction to his promise of a free and fair polls.

Critics also doubt his claimed resolve, going by outcomes of previous elections, many of which were marred with violence, vote rigging and vote buying amongst others.
