Authorities of Government College, Umuahia, Abia State, have handed over six students of the school to the police for alleged cult activities and unruly behaviour.
The Principal of the College, Jerry Onyemechi, disclosed this at the send-off ceremony for the 2015/2016 students of the school.
Onyemechi said that the students, who had failed in their various classes at the end of the last session, also refused to repeat them.
He said the essence of handing over the suspects to the police was to demonstrate the authorities’ zero tolerance for deviants and to serve as a deterrent to other students.
Reiterating his determination to rid the college of indiscipline and criminal activities, he lamented the care-free attitude of some of the parents and guardians to their children’s and wards’ anti-social behaviour.
Onyemechi expressed concern over the porous nature of the college premises, pointing out that this had made it very difficult to control the students and trespassers.
He raised the alarm over alleged encroachment on the college premises by its old-boys association and the host community, noting that he had complained about it to the appropriate quarters but nothing had been done.
The principal, who expressed confidence in the capacity of the students to be its worthy ambassadors, called on the Abia State Government to come to the aid of the school to ameliorate the condition.
Speaking on the occasion, the out-going captain of the college, Uchenna Onyenso, admonished his colleagues to live up to expectations wherever they found themselves.
Onyenso expressed appreciation to the principal and management of the college over what he described as their strict attitude to the students and for having positive impact on their lives.
