CHAIRMAN of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun state, Sunday Bisi, has said there is palpable fear for the nation’s budding democracy if governments fail to take urgent steps to address fundamental issues affecting the populace.
Bisi, in an exclusive chat with our correspodent in Osogbo, said with the growing demands for secession, hardships being faced by average Nigerians and insecurity across the country, the democracy currently enjoyed might be negatively affected.
On how Nigeria had fared in the last 22 years of unbroken democracy, Bisi said, “We thank God for the country Nigeria. At least, since 1999, God has been very kind and fair to us. That we are celebrating this feat for the first time; no military incursion and democracy is thriving.
“We are not where we should be but we thank God we are moving on. I pray Nigeria will get it right. And I pray that never in the history of this country will there be military incursion because military Government is an abberation and we don’t want it.
“As to wether we have fared very well or not, this is not where this country should be especially when the APC took over government, things have taken a dramatic turn. We have been drawn backward to the military era that we were complaining about.
“When this government took over power, they said they had three point agenda; they said they wanted to fight corruption and insecurity, but now in Nigeria, we have never had it so bad in the area of Insecurity. Kidnapping, baditry, Fulani herdsmen killings etc have become the order of the day. That has been the bane of our democracy.
“Corruption is worsening. You can see what is happening around. I was reading a newspaper that the Federal Government borrowed money from Ibori loot. So, things are really worse for us in this country.”
Making projections as the nation advances, he said, “The government should try and fulfil their promises. We know it’s not easy to get to the stage of Utopia where we will have everything 100% but we have to do our best. The Government came into power and started complaining.
“When Obasanjo came, he made so many things, he did his best and corrected many of them. Jonathan came too and did his best. But this one we are hearing since Buhari administration came to power, it seems they have lost focus. They don’t even know where to go. They are kind of confused Government.”
