MOVEMENT for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has declared May 30, 2021, as Biafra Day.
There would, however, be no celebration on the set date, MQSSOB said, while directing all markets, schools, banks and other public offices in ‘Biafra land’ to sit at home on that day as a mark of respect for their fatherland.
it noted that this was also a reminder to the visions and commandments of great ancestors that “we are not Nigerians but Biafrans”.
National Director of Information for the Group, Samuel Edeson, gave the directive in a statement at the weekend.
The sit-at-home date was reportedly arrived at after the National meeting of MASSOB, held at its headquarters in Enugu.
At the meeting, it was agreed that Biafra Day would be commemorated on May 30, in respect of the ordinances of the late warlord and leader of Biafra, Odumegwu Ojukwu, the statement said.
According to MASSOB, Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra with the total consent and full support of the elders and the people of Biafra on May 30, 1967.
It therefore said the group did not intend to observe the anniversary on any other date, except May 30, which it said was sacrosanct in the history of Biafra.
“The ordinances of our great leader, General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, must be jealousy and eloquently adhered to; any attempt to change it by disgruntled persons will be strictly resisted,” MASSOB said.
“This year’s anniversary will be celebrated by the people of Biafra not as a pro-Biafra group, but a mark of respect and honour to our father land, it is also a reminder to the visions and commandments of our great ancestors that we are not Nigerians but Biafrans,” the statement added.
The Group, however, urged Biafrans to observe special prayers and supplication for all their fallen heroes.
