The West African Examinations Council has released the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates in 2016.
The result was announced by the council’s Head of National Office, Mr. Olutise Adenipekun, on Friday.
According to Adenipekun, a total of eight hundred and seventy eight thousand and forty (878,040) candidates, representing 52.97%, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
The council also affirmed an improvement in this year’s performances of the candidates compared with the previous years.
Adenipekun said, “The percentage of candidates that obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2014 and 2015 were 31.28% and 38.68%, respectively.”
He stressed that the improvement was a result of the collective efforts of the students, teachers and government, advising that such a perfoemance should be sustained till 2017.
However, a total of 1,552,758 candidates registered for the examination, while 1,544,234 actually sat for it
Out of the total number of candidates who sat for the examination, 1,393,907 candidates, representing 90.26%, have their results fully released.
158,718 candidates, representing 9.74%, have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.
Addressing this situation, Adenipekun said that, “Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.”
He added that the results of 137,295 candidates, representing 8.89%, are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination misconduct
