FG suspends hike in electricity tariff for 2 weeks

THE Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued an order suspending the hike in electricity tariff for two weeks.

The suspension of the September 1 2020 hike is in line with the agreement the Federal Government reached with the Organised Labour, which led to the suspension of the much publicised nationwide strike on Sunday night.

However, Nigerians are apprehensive that this may be only a temporary measure awaiting further painful decisions if the labour leaders are not firm.

The Commission, on Tuesday, directed the 11 electricity Distribution Companies to suspend, for 14 days, in the first instance, the controversial hike in tariff.

Meanwhile, The Point learnt that Labour leaders will continue with consultations with the Federal Government on outstanding issues, with a view to addressing major concerns of the masses considerably.

The NERC Order, referenced, ‘NERC/209/2020’, was titled, ‘NERC Order on Suspension of the Multi Year Tariff Order 2020 for the electricity distribution licensees’ and addressed to the DISCOs.

The notice was jointly signed by the Chairman of NERC, James Momoh; and Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye.
