The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has paid a one-day working visit to Borno State to assess the security situation in the state and evaluate the restoration of normal policing activities in the North East.
Idris’ visit was sequel to the adoption of a comprehensive organisational strategy to restore police services in the towns and villages liberated from the Boko Haram insurgents.
On the entourage of IGP’s assessment team were the Comptrollers-General of Immigration and Nigeria Prisons Service, Alhaji Mohammed Baba and Alhaji Jafaru Ahmed, respectively; the Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abdullahi Gana; Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Joshak Habila; Commissioner of Police, Peter Ogunyawo, in charge of the Police Mobile Force and commanders of police specialised teams.
As part of the visit, the IGP paid a courtesy call on the Governor of the state, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, in his office.
He told Shettima that he was in the state as part of the North-East police strategy to assess security in the state and to facilitate the deployment of Police officers for the protection and security of the returning displaced persons.
The police chief added that his visit to the camps was to evaluate the implementation of civil authority and appraise the security needs of the IDPs.
He donated some relief materials to the IDPs at Muna Garage Camp.
Governor Shettima, in his response, thanked the IGP for his visit and donations to the camp.
He noted that the appointment of the IGP was based on his sterling qualities, assuring him of the state’s cooperation and support to the police.
During his visit to the state, the IGP also paid a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno, Alh. Dr Abubakar Ibn Omar Garbai El-amiri Elkanemi.
He emphasised the critical role of traditional rulers in ensuring harmony in the community and promised to collaborate with the royal fathers in ensuring the security of the country.
Idris also visited the military formation at Maimaleri Barracks, where he interacted with the Theatre Commander, Major-General Leo Irabor.
The IGP stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration in achieving national goals, especially in the restoration of peace and security in the North-East.
