…says she spends money recklessly

A 22-year-old man, Yagazie Mark, has beaten and injured his mother, Mrs Esther Mark, to stupor, following alleged instruction from his father.

The young graduate, who resides with his mother at 97, Rasheed Lamidi Street, Weighbridge, Owode, Lagos, reportedly descended on his mother and beat her till blood gushed out of her body, claiming she was reckless in spending family funds.

Sources around the street told our correspondent that the young man, who is suspected to be a ‘yahoo boy’, was fond of beating his mother.

On the beating that landed the woman in the hospital, it was gathered that a disagreement ensued between the woman and her son over alleged misappropriation of funds sent to the family by their father, who resides in the United States.

A resident, Mr. Suji Laisi, said, “Their noise attracted all of us in the street, so we had to wade in to save lives. On getting there, we met the woman with blood all over her body. She had suffered serious beating from her son. Likewise, we saw the boy beating his older cousin that resides in the house with them.

“When we asked what transpired, the woman said the boy had become a terror to the family as he usually beat her on any issue that happens in the family. She said she had been beaten in no less than four times, but she couldn’t raise the alarm because she was shy of telling people her son beats her. In the long run, we had to help the woman to a nearby hospital for treatment while other people tried to take the boy away.” Meanwhile, another resident of the area, who simply identified herself as Bukola, said, “The boy is a yahoo boy that roams the area with his gang members. I have always heard about him beating his mother in the house, but I didn’t believe it until today. I saw the woman in pain after the beating she suffered from the boy. Meanwhile, I learnt the boy claimed his father asked him to deal with her mother.”

Meanwhile, Yagazie, while defending his action, said his mother was reckless in spending money.

He also said his mother was fond of lavishly spending the money sent by his father from abroad, thereby subjecting them to poverty.

“She is the real problem in this family. She will spend all the money meant for the family and subject everyone to suffering. She has also started selling our properties. She recently sold one of our generators. She has also sold several things. She usually spends my siblings’ tuition fee. I regret having her as my mother,” he said.

It was gathered that the case had been reported at the Ketu Police Division, but nothing was done by the officers at the division.

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, could not be reached on the matter.
