Fishing in troubled waters is not what moralists would approve of. It sounds a bit awkward and steeped in sadism, but Reekado Banks seems to have greatly benefited from the fight between Olamide and his boss, Don Jazzy, at the 2015 Headies. Since winning the controversial Next Rated award, his career has been on the rise.
It would be recalled that in January, Don Jazzy and Olamide exchanged words after Reekado was announced the winner of The Headies Next Rated category. Olamide felt his protégé, Lil Kesh, was cheated. And he came on stage to express his displeasure. When Don Jazzy had the opportunity to mount the stage, he replied Olamide in a dramatic fashion. And it took the intervention of Aliko Dangote before both parties could be reconciled.
While the clash was still generating heat, Reekado dropped a single, ‘Oluwani.’ The My firstL VE song became an instant success and everyone wanted to be associated with it.
Amid preparation for the release of his debut album this year, the 22-yearold singer has released another single, entitled, ‘Standard’. He told The Point that ‘Standard’ was doing well and the reception would get better.
He explained: “It is new at the moment, but the rotation has been massive. People have been saying nice things about the song and it is becoming their favourite. My album is in the works right now. I am 80 per cent done with the songs on the album. By God’s grace, before the last quarter of this year, it will be ready for release.”
According to him, the ovation for ‘Oluwani’ was massive and thunderous. The Ondo-born artiste expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the song in one way or the other, admitting that he didn’t expect it to make so much impact.
Reekado said, “God blessed ‘Oluwani’ and I am grateful for that. Definitely, The Headies’ saga or whatever they called it, was a big contribution to the rise of my career. It is a big blessing and I actually wish it happens more often. Nobody threw punches, nobody died. It was just a clash of opinions.”
He insisted that nothing had changed in his relationship with Olamide and Lil Kesh since The Headies.
“Olamide, Kesh and I are as cool as we used to be. I’m possibly looking at dropping one more single before the album proper, but it depends on many things. We are working with the atmosphere.”
