T he Seme Area Customs Command said that the fake National Youth Service Corps member arrested with a diplomatic car had been granted administrative bail.
Recall that on Wednesday, the Command said it arrested a fake youth corps member with a Nigerian diplomatic number 138CD18 at the border post on Tuesday, who claimed to have the numbers of some highly placed personalities, including the number of the Inspector General of Police, among others.
While speaking to journalists at a press briefing, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba, said the suspect was stopped by intelligent customs officers while passing through Seme border on Tuesday.
The suspect claimed to have passed through the border on Sunday, saying he went to drop somebody somewhere.
“When he was arrested, there was a letter containing number which states, “call these numbers, otherwise call the IG.
“ When we discovered this, we alerted the enforcement unit for investigation.
“In the nutshell, ID card, telephone numbers and calling embassy is not part of customs clearing process. Smugglers can use a lot of modalities to make sure they commit these atrocities,” ,” the Comptroller said.
While interrogating with the suspect, he denied having the IG’s number neither working for any influential Nigerians.
“I am a corps member of 2015 batch but have not collected my NYSC certificate. I have problem with NYSC that is why I have not submitted my ID card in order to collect the certificate. I didn’t say I know the IG. I only assisted the owner of the car to pass through the border,” he said.
However in a recent chat with the Customs Public Relation officer of the command, Nura Abdullahi, he informed our correspondent that the suspect had been granted administrative bail, as investigation was ongoing.
On revenue collection within the period, the Command said it had so far generated the sum of N1,260,684,226.91 in two months.
