A suspected fraudster, Mr. Desmond Nunugwo, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2016.

The suspect, who died few hours after he was taken into custody, allegedly collected N91million from an acquaintance after he tricked her that he had high net worth business associates in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

He had convinced the victim that his associates will help her grow her stock fish business. Consequently, she sent the money to Nunugwo’s company’s account (Mainagge General Merchants) in Diamond Bank.

After the transfer of the funds, Nunugwo became evasive forcing the complainant to report the transaction to the EFCC.

The suspect was later arrested in Utako, Abuja at about 5.33pm on Thursday, June 9, 2016. While taking his statement, he told The Police that he received the money from the complainant. He disclosed that he had transferred N30m of the said money to Norway. But he could not explain how he spent the balance of N61 million.

Nunugwo was detained at about 7.30pm, in the absence of anybody to take him on bail. Six hours later, he suddenly complained of discomfort and was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The incident has been reported at the Wuse Police Station, where investigation into the cause of the sudden death is ongoing.
