Unlicensed driver arraigned for hitting two pedestrians

Two men, Abubakar Gima and Hassan Ibrahim, reportedly escaped death by the whiskers when an unlicensed driver, Abubaskar Umaru, hit them with a truck at Apapa area of Lagos State recently.

Men of the Apapa Police Station, led by Sergeant Audu Edeh, brought Umaru before a Magistrate court sitting in Apapa, Lagos State in connection with the accident.

The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, said Umaru committed the offence along Ijora overhead bridge, Apapa.

The accused person drove a Mack truck with registration number, LAGOS FKJ 970 XJ.

He was charged with three counts of driving without a licence, recklessness and damaging the vehicle.

The first count read that the accused person “did drive on the public highway in a reckless manner and caused injury to Abubakar Gima and Hassan Ibrahim and thereby committed an offence punishable under Law Number 4, Section 29, volume 45 of the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012.”

The second count stated that the accused person did “cause damage to a Mack Truck valued at N600,000 (six hundred thousand naira), property of Chibuzo Ozemene and thereby committed an offence punishable under Law Number 4 Section 19 Volume 45 of Lagos State Traffic Law 2012.”

The third count charge said the accused person did “drive the same vehicle on the public highway without a driver’s licence and thereby committed an offence punishable under Law Number 4, Section 20 Volume 45 of the Lagos State traffic Law,
2012.”

The accused person pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr. N.A. Layeni, granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties who must be tax payers, one of who must be a cleric.

The magistrate adjourned the case till February 20,
2019.
