TOPSHOT - Flares are launched by DRCongo Police forces during a demonstration in Goma on September 19, 2016. At least 17 people, mostly civilians, were killed on September 19, 2016 when clashes erupted ahead of a planned opposition rally in the Congolese capital Kinshasa, a minister said, warning the toll was "provisional". It was the worst violence in Kinshasa since January 2015 when a police crackdown on another opposition protest left several dozen people dead. Demonstrators were to demand the resignation of President Joseph Kabila, who has ruled the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2001. The high incidence of domestic violence across the country has become alarming. This year alone, Nigeria has recorded many of such cases with the manner of their occurrence becoming more daring and shocking.

The gory dimension many of such cases have assumed is creating panic, fear and apprehension among citizens in different parts of the country.

Recently, an unthinkable one of such cases of domestic violence occurred, when allegedly following the advice of a herbalist, a teenager killed his own mother and had sex with her corpse for money ritual purposes.

The suspect, Samuel Akpobome, 18, who hails from Delta State, was among others paraded by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, in Benin, for taking the life of his own mother, Christiana Igboyivwi, after which he slept with her corpse.

The teenager said he committed the crime following the advice given him by a native doctor.

Commenting on the incident, a security expert and Managing Director, Angels Guards Securities Limited, Mr. Israel Asigbe, said, “It’s a get-rich-quick syndrome. Parents are not asking their children where their riches are coming from. You will see a young man buying expensive cars and building mansions and they will not ask how and where he got the money from? Security has nothing to do with this. Rather, it has something to do with people’s background. We have lost our cultural values.

“Everybody wants to amass stupendous wealth without working hard for it. Even in the church, pastors would tell members of his congregation that I see you buying and driving an expensive car this year. The member of the church will now do everything he could, especially illegally, to ensure the prophecy come to pass. When he has made the money, he will now go back to the church to sow seed and the pastors will accept the dirty money.”

Also speaking, the pastor of Believe and Go To Heaven Ministry, Onyeka Chukwuma, said, “The young man has committed a great sin in the sight of God. He committed an abominable sin. First, he killed his mother and secondly, he slept with her corpse. He should repent and pray very hard so that God will forgive him. It’s a shameful but heinous act. It’s unthinkable. May God forgive him. it’s in the Bible and among the ten commandments that thou shall not kill. Honour thy mother and thy father. How did the young man honour his parents? By killing his mother and having carnal knowledge of her for money making rituals? No. Such money is cursed money and he would not have enjoyed it.”

No less worrisome was a situation where a woman killed her husband, three children and then took her own life, too.

In Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, Mrs. Veronica Adetsav killed her husband, Mr Adetsav and their three children before killing herself at about 8pm in their residence at Conrad Wergba Street,
Makurdi.

A Togolese cook in the highbrow Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos, Sunday Afobale, killed his boss and Chairman of Credit Switch Limited, Chief Ope Bademosi, recently in his residence. The killer-cook was later arrested by the police in Ondo State.

Afobale was said to have carried out the dastardly act on October 31, 2018, when his boss’ wife had gone out.

In another similar development, a 22- year -old university drop-out identified simply as Jerry was alleged to have attempted to rape a woman, Mrs. Eunice Ajayi Omoniyi, 57, but her resistance was said to have provoked her assailant, who hacked her to
death.

Her husband, Pastor Ajayi Omoniyi, who tried to prevent the suspect from killing or raping his wife was also attacked him, leaving his with serious injury.

The man was alleged to have used a digger to hack the woman to death.

Her husband was injured in the face and hands. The incident which occurred on Peace- Land Road, along Ilesa- Akure expressway, recently, made many people to wonder and ponder.

A worker, Stephen Obinna and two other accomplices were said to have plotted and kidnapped his boss’ eight-year-old son, Chuks Ezechiefoh.

Obinna lured Ezechiefoh from the church with Ice cream, which he promised to buy for him and the kid fell for the bait.

Obinna; one Eze Ifeanyi, who claimed to be a native doctor, and another accomplice, planned the kidnap with Obinna as the mastermind.

Police recently arraigned an 18 -year -old young man, Ibrahim Ismaila, for allegedly attacking a woman with a jack knife and hammer.

Ismaila stabbed Confidence David at No. 83, Kirikiri Road, City Point Hotel, Ajegunle, Lagos.

Ismaila was arrested by policemen attached to Tolu Police Station and arraigned him before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, where he was charged with stabbing the woman in the breast, chest, and back, leaving her with deep cuts.
