A phone thief, simply identified as Martin, has met his waterloo in the Ijesha area of Surulere, Lagos State, as his victim apprehended him, after he stole his handset, broke a bottle on his and injured him.
The victim, who identified himself as Taju Aiyedun, said the phone thief began to trail him after he made a call with his handset at the Lawanson area of Surulere.
Aiyedun said at first he did not suspect the thief because the man wore a clean and well- tailored clothes, which were better than what he (Aiyedun) had on him.
According to the victim, “The thief called himself Martin. As we were in the vehicle, nobody would suspect the man as a thief because he was well dressed and spoke good English. He told a woman, ‘please make a room for me. I’m not comfortable here. This place is very tight.’ He spoke very good English and looked responsible. But he disgraced himself. As we were going towards Ijesha Express bus stop, the man stole my phone, but I didn’t know until it began to ring. Before the bus stopped, I was already searching my pocket to answer the call because the ringing tone was mine. While I still searching for my phone to answer the call, the thief attempted to quickly alight from the vehcle. I shouted that nobody should leave the bus. I told the phone thief that his ringing tone sounded like mine. I told him to pick his call, but he refused. I then used another person’s phone in the bus to dial my number and my phone began to ring. He wanted to escape, but people held him.”
Aiyedun said when the other passengers in the bus threatened to deal with him, the phone thief began to beg, blaming his action on the devil.
“The man then began to beg. He blamed it on the devil. When they do bad things, they would mention the name of the devil. Anyway, the devil also took control of me as I picked up a bottle and broke it on his head and he began to bleed. I told him he should then go; I would not report the matter to the police. He was soaked in his own blood as he left in shame,” the victim added.
