A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Ike Nwachukwu, has said there is no alternative to the restructuring of the country, insisting that it holds the solution to its numerous development challenges over the years.
Nwachukwu spoke with our correspondent after hosting members of the Social Democratic Party in Abia State, who were on a courtesy visit to his home in Ovim in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
He said restructuring would not only fasten the rate of development in the Federating units, but would also bring out the best from the people for the good of both the units and the country at large.
According to the one-time military governor of old Imo State, restructuring will also encourage the units to harness their abundant human and natural resources to generate revenue for development.
Nwachukwu argued that contrary to the opinion of some people, every state in the country is endowed with enough resources that could sustain them, if properly managed.
“The situation in the country can only change through restructuring. No state is unviable, though there may be inequality in their Internally Generated Revenue,” he said.
Earlier while addressing the visiting SDP members, Nwachukwu encouraged them to entrench internal democracy in their system to ensure the emergence of credible leaders and candidates for elections.
The former Peoples Democratic Party senator, who represented Abia North Senatorial District between 1999 and 2003, lent his voice to those calling on youths to join partisan politics.
According to him, his generation has played its part on the political stage of the country and should therefore leave for the younger ones to come up with fresh ideas.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the party’s Steering Committee, Hon Chidi Nwosu, said they came to honour the general as one of the founding fathers and leaders of the state.
The former member of the state House of Assembly had added that they wanted to inform Nwachukwu that the PDP, which was the agent of transformation in the country, had arrived in the state.
Similarly, the Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Lawrence Irokansi, informed the senator that the difference between the SDP and the other parties was the quality of its leadership.
Adding his voice, the Convener of the party in the state, Ambassador Endurance Philips, said many prominent politicians in the country were waiting to join the SDP.
