Osun court remands man for attempting suicide in police custody

A 23-year-old man, Andrew Peter, has been remanded in Ilesha prison for allegedly attempting to commit suicide while in police custody.
The accused was said to have attempted the suicide by driving a nail into his own head.
The defendant, who is from Benue State, was arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun State on a three-count charge, bearing on attempted suicide.
The accused had been arrested and detained at Dugbe Police Station over alleged theft of a phone before he attempted to drive a nail into his head in the cell.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Lamidi Rasaki, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at about 10.25 pm at Dugbe Police Station and Esho Brains and Spine Specialist Hospital, Oke – Fia.
He said the accused gave false information to the police that one Kolawole Oloyede was responsible for the nail found driven into his head.
The prosecutor stated that the accused also escaped from the Esho Brains and Spine Specialist Hospital at Oke-Fia, where he was receiving treatment.
Inspector Rasaki noted that the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 327, 192 and 135(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 volume 11 Laws of Osun State
2006.
The defendant, who had no legal representation, pleaded guilty to the three-count charge.
The Magistrate, Mr. Olusegun Ayilara, ordered the accused to be remanded in Ilesha prison custody and adjourned further trial till May 9.
