The Proprietor of Emcoy Favoured Group of Schools, Lagos, Dr. Emmanuel Oyewole, has called on education stakeholders in the country to invest more in teacher education.
Oyewole said this would attract Nigerian children to the course and increase the number of qualified teachers in the country.
He said this during the second term scholarship award ceremony of the school, recently.
According to him, it had become imperative for all stakeholders to join hands with the government and make teaching the kind of profession that everybody would dream of.
Oyewole said, “Well, after the training, are they compensated? Are they given something that will make everybody to be craving to become a teacher? Are they paid on time, what levels are the placed? It is just because teachers are looked upon as the least of well-to-do; that is why nobody wants to be a teacher.
“We have all got it wrong in the past. It is because of the place we have put doctors and lawyers that has made everyone crave for these professions. But if we can place them where they belong, things will change in the country.”
“What I’m saying is that we should have more colleges of education to train and prepare teachers. When they are trained and certified competent, they should be engaged and well-renumerated.”
Oyewole noted that teachers should receive their reward while here on earth, rather than wait till they got to heaven.
He, however, argued that no matter the level of technology introduced in education, teachers would always remain relevant in the sector, urged them to improve and update themselves technologically.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Anthony Siakpere, told the students to celebrate God-given talents, adding that this would help them as they grow.
A total of 15 students were awarded scholarships at the ceremony.
