Cowrie Rfc has retained the Racing 2018 Tens trophy after defeating hosts, Racing Rfc 26-0 in the final to kick-start their 2018 season on a winning note.

Both teams were unbeaten all-day until the final match. Cowries started on the front foot and led 5-0 in the second minute when fly half, Azeez Ladipo, broke the Racing defence and released Captain Ono Jatto who raced 35 meters for their first try. Racing settled into the game and tried to retain possession but the Cowries defence held firm until the eight-minute when Ladipo broke the line again from set play and passed to young winger, Daniel who finished off from 50 meters to score under the post. Cowrie led 12-0 at half time after Ladipo’s conversion.

The second half was more of the same as Cowries quickly got on the score sheet again through Jatto converted by Scrum half, Alfred Oche to stretch their lead to 19-0.

Cowrie dominated possession all through and were rewarded with a penalty try by center referee, Mohammed Salisu when Racing sweeper, Steven James pushed Christian Ogar off as Ogar was about to pick up the ball, he had kicked and chased down to the try area. It ended 26-0 as Cowries retained their trophy.

This was the first tournament in Lagos to herald the 2018 Rugby season.

Meanwhile, women’s Rugby match was part of the highlight at the Racing Tens Rugby Tournament played at the British International School Oniru, Lekki Lagos, Nigeria.

Abia State Women’s Rugby team held their Lagos State women’s counterpart to a barren draw during the first of their two matches in an exciting and nail biting rugby encounter. They however went down by a Try to Nil (5-0) in the second 10-a-side Rugby match when substitute winger, Kafayat Asagbesoro powered through two defenders to cross the whitewash for their only try.

The ‘’Tag Rugby’’ version of the schools’ tourney saw AVI-CENA Junior School defeating their host British International School (BIS) Juniors at the nick of time by two Tries (10 Points) to One Try (5 Points). The host BIS came back strong to defeat Ojoku High School by 10-0 in the Seniors Schools Cup Contact version event.
