The fire outbreak, which gutted Second Coming Cooking Gas plant along CMD in Magodo area of Lagos early on Monday, was reportedly caused by gas leakage from the gas plant.
An eyewitness, Mr. Segun, told our correspondent that the inferno, which reportedly claimed 10 lives and several injured, “affected three reservoir tanks and one 33,000 litre gas truck in the gas station with a secondary explosion within the plant.”
Operatives of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Federal Road Safety Corps and the Lagos State Emergency Agency were able to contain the inferno few hours after the outburst and also carried out the rescue operation.
“Two burnt bodies were recovered behind the fence of the gas station, while other casualties were also recorded with various degrees of burns and injuries,” he added.
Meanwhile, the men of the Lagos State Fire Service with four fire trucks and the LRU Fire Unit with two fire trucks were able to contain the spread to adjourning buildings in the area.
Other emergency responders on the ground include RRS, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Red Cross, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Federal Fire Service.
The General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, said, “The situation is completely under control with a perimeter of the vicinity secured and evacuation of people away from the scene. The Officials of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company has also completely isolated power supply from the affected area to avoid any other incident.”
He, however, assured that proper investigation would be conducted to ascertain the possible cause and to prevent future reoccurrence of the unfortunate and avoidable incident in the State
