The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights has described Tuesday’s showdown between operatives of the Department of State Services and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the Asokoro, Abuja, residence of a former DSS Director-General, Ekpeyong Ita,  as “shameful, sickening and uninspiring.”

The CDHR also chided the security operatives, who also cordoned off and prevented the arrest of former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayo Oke.

President of CDHR, Mr. Malachy Ugwummadu, in a statement condemned the “dishonourable and unethical actions,” warning that such reprehensible conducts had consequences.

The CDHR president, who expressed worry over the overzealousness of men of the DSS and their less than average conduct as public officers, called for appropriate sanctions to avoid future occurrence.

He said, “The repeated and clandestine approach, where officers or men of the DSS mask themselves in official discharge of their duties, is becoming very worrisome. Needless to say such operation targeted at a sister organisation can only lead to chaos, anarchy and disharmony in the entire law enforcement apparatus of the country.

“We, therefore, call on the DG to tame their excesses and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their functions without hindrance, to avoid any further form of embarrassment that would send the wrong signal.”
