Two siblings, Cology Akeem Tadese, 45, and Arolu Akeem Tadese, 41, have been dragged before a Magistrate’s court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly assaulting a police sergeant, Taiwo Ikusanmi, on official duty.
The Osun State Police Command, which brought the siblings to court on Wednesday, accused them of pelting Ikusanmi with stones till he sustained injury on his head.
Addressing the court, police prosecutor, Sunday God, said the accused persons attacked the police sergeant on June 12, 2017 around 11:30am in Iwo and made attempts to kill him by stoning and inflicting a deep injury on his head.
He argued that the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 516, 320(1),356(1),355 and 197 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
Meanwhile, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the five count-charge bearing on conspiracy and assault.
It was gathered that the monarch of Iwo town, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, had offered to install a member of the accused persons’ family as the Sookoo of the kingdom, but the siblings were among other family members that rejected the chieftaincy offer.
To this end, the monarch was alleged to have attempted to arrest those that did not support the chieftaincy title.
Some policemen, including Sergeant Ikusanmi, had stormed the siblings’ house to effect their arrest before the alleged assault occurred.
Meanwhile, counsel to Cology and Arolu, Mr. Naheem Adekunle, made applications for their bail and begged the court to make the conditions liberal.
Magistrate Fatimah Sodamade granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety each in the same amount.
Sodamade adjourned the case till September 11 for mention at Iwo Magisterial Court.
