A Police Inspector, Abraham Arowogun, on Tuesday shot dead a Divisional Crime Officer, DCO, Timothy Aruehi, at Kajola in Odigbo Local Government area of Ondo state.
Arowogun subsequently committed suicide by jumping into a deep well at Kajola Divisional Police Station where the deceased were attached before their death.
Corpses of the two policemen have reportedly been deposited at the mortuary of the State General Hospital, Ore.
It was learnt that the gory incident followed a heated argument between the two policemen over an alleged bribe of N150, 000.
The late DCO was said to have discovered that Arowogun collected the money in a case he was investigating but failed to report it.
A source said: “There was an issue that happened between the two officers. Arowogun was investigating a case and the DCO, Aruehi, discovered that a sum of N150,000 was involved in it which Arowogun had converted to his private purse.
“The DCO called and questioned him over the money. An argument ensued between the two officers. The Inspector left the DCO office angrily only to come back with a gun and shot Aruehi dead.”
“Other policemen at the station ran for dear life immediately the incident happened.
Arowogun then left the scene and jumped into a well at the back of the station.”
Residents of the community described Arowogun as an easy-going person with no record of mental illness.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the command, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate.
Joseph said the command had commenced investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the matter.
“It is an unfortunate incident but we have begun investigation into it. The command is sad over the incident and our hearts are very heavy.
“We are doing everything possible to further dig into the matter and also to talk to our officers and men on the need to avert similar occurrence,” Joseph said.
