A member of the National Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani, has said that it has become imperative for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to urgently constitute a committee to calm frayed nerves causing tension across the country.

Senator Sani, who is representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, said that urgent drastic measures should be taken by the Presidency to address the agitations by different ethnic groups in Nigeria in the past one week. Sani, who spoke in Lagos, expressed concern over the unity of the country.

He urged President Buhari that the c o m m i t t e e should be made up of eminent Nigerians drawn from the six geopolitical zones to ensure the stability of the country.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should, as a matter of urgency, constitute a committee for peace, unity and reconciliation; made up of eminent Nigerians from diverse fields of human endeavours to listen to agitations, to listen to grudges, and give out necessary remedies that will, at least for now, calm the country,” Sani said.

The lawmaker also argued that Nigeria as a country needed a new master plan to save her from the mess she had been plunged into for a long time.

“The only way to address the problem of the country is to immediately implement fundamental political economic and social changes. There is a need for a new master plan for Nigeria. Master plan that will do justice to all parts of the country, a master plan that will make it possible for all parts of the country to contribute to the Nigerian enterprise. A master plan that will ensure that those who are marginalised, ostracised and those who are left behind, are carried along and given a sense of belonging,” he said.

While charging citizens to contribute their quota to steps being made to improve the country, Sani added, “Buhari alone cannot solve the problem of this country. It will be totally wrong to think that one honest man has the magic to address the problem of over 180 million people. His integrity alone is not what is needed to save this country with multi-cultural people from the current mess. We need all hands to be on deck. Nigeria today is faced with series of problems; we have still not got it right as a nation and as a people. And the reason for this is because of the leaders elected, who do not have the interest of the country at heart. Nigerians must rise against such leaders.”

On the raging feud between him and the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir ElRufai, the lawmaker said his disagreement with the governor of his home state was not likely to end because the two of them did not share the same ideology for the country. “There will be no end until the end comes,” Sani said.
