The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained at a local security office in Okija town of the state.

The pregnant woman identified as Mrs Chidimma was reportedly nabbed by some agents of Anambra Vigilante Group and detained for two days.

Some human rights defenders had got wind of Chidimma’s incarceration and raised the alarm.

The activists claimed that Chidimma’s husband is indebted to someone who invited the vigilantes to pick up his wife.

The report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itamas, who ordered rescue operation of the woman and an investigation into the report.

A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga on Wednesday, disclosed that the CP frowned at such acts of indiscriminate detention and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the state vigilante group.

Itamas assured that the root cause of the incidents would be addressed to avert future occurrence.

He also initiated necessary moves with relevant authorities to checkmate the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the state.

The statement, however, indicated that the victim’s husband was accused of stealing and not indebtedness.
