Spanish sports daily Marca has ranked the best footballers of the 2023-2024 season, with seven African players included in the list.
The jury consisted of over 100 former footballers, journalists and analysts from around the world.
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior was named the best player of the 2023-2024 season by Marca, with Jude Bellingham finishing second and Rodri completing the top three.
According to Marca, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was named the best African player, with the Egyptian international finishing 31st in the overall ranking with 1,211 points.
The second highest ranked African player is Bayer Leverkusen’s Nigeria international Victor Boniface, who registered 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 games last season.
Boniface won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and featured in the Europa League showpiece in his first season at Bayer Leverkusen.
Former Stuttgart goal poacher Serhou Guirassy is the third highest ranked African player, followed by Atalanta’s Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, who is 65th in the world.
Ayoub El Kaabi (Olympiakos/Morocco), Odilon Kossounou (Bayer Leverkusen/Ivory Coast) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Al Qadsiah/Gabon) complete Africa’s top seven footballers, ranking 76th, 78th, and 94th respectively.
The 2024 African Footballer of the Year nominees Simon Adingra, Achraf Hakimi, and Ronwen Williams were excluded from Marca’s top 100 players in the world.
