…want Lagos State govt’s intervention
The organisers of Thursday’s Rumbles in Lagos boxing bout between former boxing champion,
Evander ‘Real Deal’ Holyfied and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, are in
a financial mess.
The Point gathered that the organisers have yet to get the necessary resources expected
from the Lagos State Government to support the bout as part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the State.
The organisers struggled to gather resources together to give the visiting boxing legend a
befitting accommodation after arriving the country on Tuesday.
“It is unfortunate to see the organisers moving from the pillar to the post in search of
money. Tinubu has not given them money yet as he wants them to raise money as the motive
behind the bout. It is for charity. That is why they hiked the gate fees for well-to-do
individuals to buy tickets and support the bout, but as I speak to you, I don’t know if
they have got enough money,” a competent source told The Point.
Interested individuals or group of people planning to witness the historic ‘comic’ boxing
bout are to pay gate fees from N10,000 to N250,000.
The bout already tagged Charity Boxing Bout in commemoration of Lagos at 50 celebrations will be held on May 25 at the Land Mark Event Centre in Lagos.
The momentous event titled Rumbles in Lagos and would be refereed by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.
This charity-focused event is aimed at bringing world attention to some health-related
issues in Africa, and will focus on cases such as Autism in Children, Breast Cancer,
Mental Illness, HIV/AIDS and River Blindness. The organisers will also be donating medical
and relief materials worth millions of naira to Lagos State Government and other states.
