In this photo taken Tuesday, Sept, 17. 2013, Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs speaks during an interview in Lagos, Nigeria. A 15-second drum roll and the title of the film, “Deceptive Heart,” comes crashing onto the screen in a groovy 1970s font. Less than 10 minutes into the Nollywood movie, the heart of plot is revealed: A woman has two boyfriends and doesn’t know what to do. The story moves as quickly as the film appears to have been shot. Some scenes are shaky, with cameras clearly in need of a tripod, and musical montages are often filled with pans of the same building. Most Nollywood movies are made in less than 10 days and cost about $25,000. (AP Photo/ Sunday Alamba)

At a time, I was based in England but I got an invite from the Federal Government to come back to Nigeria for FESTAC 77. So, we were having a management meeting for a play, Wole Soyinka’s ‘Jero Metamorphosis,’ when a young lady (Joke Silva) walked in. Immediately she walked in, something inside me told me that she was going to be my wife and I told the people around me that I was going to marry her. That was in 1981. In 1986, we got married.

Before I met my wife, I was not in a relationship. I had a disappointment that kept me away and I never wanted any serious commitment because the wound was still raw. At a time, I was with someone I thought we would be one but it did not happen. But when I met this new lady, we talked and played a lot and it surprised people a lot. We travelled to- gether many times as well.

When it was time to purpose to her, I did not hesitate and i t was as if she was waiting for the question as well. I proposed to her in Tunisia because we were shooting a film, ‘Ashanti.’ She came to join me there on her way to England and I asked her to marry me.

I did not fall for just her beauty; I loved the whole package and immediately I knew she was my wife. I said it and she looked at me ‘up and down’ but I did not care.
