Osun State Government has confirmed a fresh case of monkeypox in Ilesa West Local Government Area of the state.
To prevent further spread of the virus, the state government has activated its emergency response system.
While the first case of the virus was recorded in March this year in Ilesa West Local Government, the state government said it has confirmed the second incident in the same local council on August 19.
The latest confirmed monkeypox virus is on a 25-year-old lady.
The two cases have made the state government to activate the State Incident Management System involving multiple agencies to curb the outbreak and oversee public measures.
The emergency response team at its meeting said the patients’ condition had greatly improved.
Speaking, the state Commissioner for Health, Jola Akinola, said, “I don’t entertain any fear whatsoever. COVID-19 came we fought is successfully,” adding that monkeypox virus would not be different.
The team said it would ensure contact tracing and embark on public enlightenment on the preventive measures against the new variant.
According to the epidemiological summary presented at the meeting, this year, the state has so far recorded 47 suspected cases of monkeypox, with 45 coming out negative and two confirmed cases.
